How the knockout plan for 8 players works
8 players fill the field exactly — no byes, everyone starts in round 1. There are 3 rounds and 7 matches in total — every match knocks out exactly one player.
How the round-robin plan for 8 players works
Everyone plays everyone exactly once: 7 matchdays with 28 matches in total. With an odd number of players, one player has a bye each matchday.
Want live scoring with it?
This plan is static — for printing or hanging up. The SmartDart wizard gives you the same tournament plan with live scoring on every phone, QR join for players and a projector view. Free up to 10 players, no download.

Common questions about the bracket generator
Is the bracket generator really free?
Yes — completely free, no account, no download. Enter names, generate the plan, save it as an image or print it. You only need a (free) SmartDart tournament once you want to play with live scoring, QR join and the projector view.
How are byes distributed?
If the player count isn't a power of two (4, 8, 16, 32 …), the field is padded and the surplus slots become byes. Who gets a bye is decided by the draw — the byes are spread as far apart in the bracket as possible so no half of the draw is favoured.
Knockout or round robin — which fits when?
Knockout is fast and dramatic (every match is an elimination match) — ideal for pub tournaments and big fields. Round robin is fairer because everyone plays the same number of games — ideal for small groups up to ~8 players or league nights. In a real SmartDart tournament you can also combine both (group stage + knockout).
Can I play this plan with live scoring?
Yes: create the tournament in the SmartDart wizard with the same names — every player scores on their own phone, the bracket updates live, and spectators follow along via QR code or on a projector. Free up to 10 players.
Are the pairings drawn at random?
Yes. The order you enter the names in does not decide the pairings — the generator draws them. So the first name is not automatically matched against the last one on your list. Don't like the draw? Hit “Draw again” for a completely new one. The same goes for the round-robin fixtures: the draw decides who meets on which matchday.
