The browser-based alternative to DartCounter

DartCounter (Target Darts) is great for solo training and online 1v1 with a voice caller. SmartDart is the free complement to it — with real tournament management, projector view, and unlimited solo matches against AI bots without weekly limits. Use both side by side.
Runs in the browser · Free · No app required

DartCounter is a solo and online-multiplayer dart app in the Target Darts ecosystem (with voice caller Ray Martin and Target Omni hardware integration). SmartDart is tournament and league software for multiple players on-site. This page is not a takedown — it's an honest use-case delineation. Many players use both in parallel. All DartCounter facts verified on dartcounter.net and targetdarts.com (May 2026).

What DartCounter does very well

Before comparing — these are DartCounter's strengths, areas where SmartDart deliberately doesn't compete.

Voice caller atmosphere

John McDonald announces matches, Ray Martin calls scores. Makes solo sessions emotional — SmartDart doesn't have this.

Target Omni integration

DartCounter works with the Target Omni auto-scoring board. If you own that board, you get real-time scoring without typing.

Action Replay clips

10 clips for 7 days on the free tier, 30 clips with favorites in Ultimate. Useful for self-analyzing your throws.

Mobile-first app experience

Native iOS and Android app with push notifications, online match-making, personal profile. Feels seamless on a phone.

What SmartDart focuses on

SmartDart fills the gap that DartCounter intentionally leaves open — multi-player tournaments and event software.

Real tournament management

7 formats (KO, Group + KO, Champions League, Double Elimination, Swiss, Round Robin, League). Auto-bracket, schedule, live standings — features DartCounter doesn't offer.

Projector mode

PDC-style display for club nights, pub tournaments and league match days — bracket, live score, stats ticker at the bottom.

Solo matches without weekly limits

Quick Match against an AI bot in 5 difficulty levels (Beginner to World-Class) — unlimited on the free tier. DartCounter Free allows 3 online matches per week.

Runs in the browser

No app install, no app store, no account requirement for fellow players. Scan a QR code, score, done — works on iPhone too without an App Store account.

Free core features

Tournament mode, projector, Quick Match vs. bot, checkout training — all on the free tier. PRO/PREMIUM only needed for higher player counts and pro formats.

Direct comparison

The two tools pursue different goals — the comparison shows which one covers what.

Use both in parallel — works well

DartCounter and SmartDart address different moments. Many players in our community use both depending on the situation:

Solo training at home, voice caller atmosphere and online 1v1: open DartCounter.

Club championship, league season, regulars cup: launch SmartDart.

Pub night with projector and bracket on the screen: SmartDart on the tablet, DartCounter optionally on the phone for personal stats.

Frequently asked questions

DartCounter Ultimate costs €4.99 per month or €34.99 per year (May 2026, source: dartcounter.net). The free tier is limited: 3 online matches per week, 8 game modes, view of one previous match. SmartDart has a permanently free BASIC plan with no match limit, plus PRO (€4.99/mo) and PREMIUM (€9.99/mo) for higher capacity and pro tournament formats.

DartCounter when you train solo at home, want to compete with online players and love the voice caller atmosphere. SmartDart when you organize a multi-player on-site tournament (club, pub, league, friends), want to use a projector, or want unlimited solo matches against an AI bot.

Yes, no problem. They overlap only partially and don't block each other. In clubs many players use DartCounter for personal tracking and SmartDart as event software for the championship.

No. SmartDart runs in the browser on smartphone, tablet and PC. Optionally you can install it as a PWA (Progressive Web App) on the home screen — feels like a native app but doesn't come from the app store.

Not for solo training and online 1v1 matchmaking — those are DartCounter's core strengths and are deliberately not covered by SmartDart. For multi-player tournaments, projector setup and league seasons, SmartDart fully replaces DartCounter, because DartCounter doesn't have those features.

There is no direct hardware integration between SmartDart and Target Omni — that connection is built into the DartCounter stack. SmartDart works with any steel or soft tip board: a player taps in the scores manually on the phone. If you want auto-scoring, you can run SmartDart in parallel with Omni and enter scores twice — or combine SmartDart with platform-independent hardware like Autodarts.io / Scolia.

Currently no. That's a deliberate choice — SmartDart is built for multi-player tournaments where a voice caller can quickly become noise overload. If you miss the sound effects, you can run DartCounter in parallel in solo mode.

DartCounter lets you join online tournaments inside its platform, but is not a tournament manager in the sense of 'create a bracket, invite players, generate a schedule, project on a screen'. That event-software function is exactly the gap SmartDart fills.
